Rep. Young Kim

WASHINGTON, DCLast Week,U.S. Representative Young Kim (CA-40) joined Reps. Chrissy Houlahan (PA-06), Haley Stevens (MI-11)andDebbie Lesko (AZ-08)to kick offthe Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Caucus as the newest co-chair.  

The Women in STEM Caucus aims to support and increase the number of women and minority groups in STEM fields.  

“STEM opportunitieshelp students get good-paying jobs, strengthen our economy, bolster our national security and boost global competitiveness. That is why STEM workforce and education initiatives continue to be a top priority of mine in Congress,” said Rep. Kim. While women make up nearly half of our nation’s workforce, less than one thirdof women are in our STEM workforce. We need all hands on deck to tackle our nation’s challenges and ensure the U.S. remains a leader in science and technology.I am pleased to join the Women in STEM Caucus and will continue advocating for more women in STEM.”  

Rep. Kim has been a tireless advocate for STEM opportunities through initiatives such as: 

  • Leading the bipartisan Innovations in Informal STEM Learning Act (H.R. 3859), which became law through the CHIPS and Science Act, to support afterschool programs that provide STEM exposure and experiences to students; 

  • Serving as co-chair of the Congressional App Challenge in the117th Congress, where she hosted the largest App Challenge in history and had a nationwide record of 192 student teams from her own Congressional District; 

  • Urging the Biden administration to strengthen STEM education in response to the largest decrease in 4th and 8thgrade mathematics scores recorded in the 2022 National Assessment of Educational Progress Report Card with 4th and 8th-grade mathematics scores recording their largest decrease in decades; 

  • Fighting for advanced math opportunities in California; and, 

  • Helping introduce bills including:the Data Science and Literacy Act of 2023(H.R. 1050) to expand access to STEM education; the Research Excellence through STEM Inclusion Act (H.R. 3809) to grow our STEM workforce; and,the Securing American Leadership in Science and Technology Act to create a long-term investment strategy in research, infrastructure and supply chain management.
