Rep. Young Kim and daughters

Jul 21, 2023 | Health, Press Releases

Washington D.C. – This week, U.S. Representative Young Kim (CA-40), who serves as co-chair of the Maternity Care Caucus, joined Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (PA-06) and fellow Maternity Caucus co-chair Robin Kelly (IL-02) to introduce a bipartisan resolution to recognize July 19, 2023 as National Bump Day, a global day celebrating expecting mothers and babies.

The Bump Day global campaign raises awareness of maternal health care challenges and the need to end all preventable maternal deaths in the U.S. and around the world.

“Mom and grandma are the best titles I will ever have. Seeing my daughters have kids of their own has made supporting moms and expecting moms even more important for me in Congress,” said Rep. Kim. “National Bump Day celebrates moms, expecting moms, and babies across the nation and raises awareness of the preventable maternal mortality crisis in our communities. Pregnancy is a beautiful part of life, and I will keep working as Maternity Care Caucus co-chair to uplift all moms and women and provide them with the best care possible.”

“This resolution sends a clear message around the globe: The United States remains steadfast in its commitment to mothers and their children. Healthy mothers mean healthy families, who go on to construct strong and productive communities,” said Rep. Houlahan. “All moms, no matter what they look like or where they come from, deserve access to quality maternal healthcare. This resolution is a bipartisan promise that America will continue to strive to prevent maternal deaths, both at home and abroad.”

“Bump Day is a powerful reminder of the work we still have left to do to secure the best care and support for mothers and babies. I am proud to stand alongside my colleagues in calling for meaningful action to address the maternal mortality crisis, a crisis that disproportionately impacts Black women,” said Rep. Kelly. “Every mom deserves to feel safe and cared for during and after their pregnancy. Bump Day is an opportunity to celebrate the joys of motherhood and commit to ensuring that every mom has a healthy pregnancy and a happy life with their child.”

“The health of our moms and babies isn’t a partisan issue — it’s a human issue. That’s why the What to Expect Project and I are so excited and proud to work together with Republicans and Democrats in both chambers in support of the #BumpDay Congressional Resolution — dedicated to raising awareness about and inspiring action to address the urgent need for better, more equitable, more respectful, and responsive care for every mom, everywhere. No exceptions, no disparities. We’re grateful to Representative Chrissy Houlahan for her continued leadership of maternal health and for leading this vital congressional effort jointly with the support of Representatives Young Kim and Robin Kelly. Their resolute support of maternal health on #BumpDay and every day is inspiring. Together, we can make sure that every mom gets the care she and her baby need and deserve,” said Heidi Murkoff, author of What to Expect When You’re Expecting and founder of the What to Expect Project.
