Yorba Linda, CA – Joanne Xu, a junior at Orange Lutheran High School from Yorba Linda, was named the winner of the Congressional Art Competition for California’s 40th District. Her artwork, A Twilighted Lucerne, was a self-portrait and Byzantine-inspired piece made with acrylic paint, mosaic tiles, and silver leaf.
The office of U.S. Representative Young Kim (CA-40) hosted a reception at the Tustin Community Center on Friday, May 5, 2023 to honor the participants of the art competition, which is open to all high school students across CA-40.
“I am so impressed by the creativity and skill exhibited by our CA-40 high school artists who submitted their artwork for this year’s Congressional Art Competition,” said Rep. Young Kim. “Joanne’s artwork portrays the resilience and reflection of a true artist, and I am pleased that my colleagues in Congress and thousands of visitors from around the world will be able to view it in our nation’s Capital building.”
The panel of judges for the competition included: Tony Wong, President of the Tustin Area Council for Fine Arts; Katy Vandermost, Director of Partnerships at Child Creativity Lab; Jennifer Keil, Museum Director at the Moulton Museum; and Lia Halloran, Chair of the Art Department at Chapman University.
The following winners from CA-40 were chosen:
1st Place: A Twilighted Lucerne by Joanne Xu, Grade 11 from Orange Lutheran High School
2nd Place: Colors of Memory by Branden Gong, Grade 11 from Arnold O. Beckman High School
3rd Place: Dreamscape by Athena Maldonado, Grade 11 from Orange County School of Arts
