California's 40th District

Feb 10, 2022 | In The News

U.S. Rep. Young Kim (R-CA) on Feb. 8 launched the Human Trafficking Congressional Task Force to bring together stakeholders in her district to help identify problems and identify policy solutions to help prevent more human trafficking victimization.

In 2019, more than 1,500 human trafficking cases were reported in California, more than any other state, according to the National Human Trafficking Hotline.

“Human trafficking is modern day slavery that exploits some of the most vulnerable members of our community,” Rep. Kim said, adding that the COVID-19 pandemic has led to increased risks and hindered prevention efforts.

The congresswoman will team up with law enforcement agencies and community advocate groups in Orange, Los Angeles, and San Bernardino counties to hear from those leaders fighting and prosecuting human trafficking, along with those providing support to victims.

“These unconscionable crimes should not find safe harbor in our homes, neighborhoods, streets, or ports. I am proud to launch a Human Trafficking Congressional Task Force to help address this issue head-on by hearing from those on the front lines of combatting human trafficking,” Rep. Kim said.

Task force participants will include the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, the Anaheim Police Department, and the Crittenton Services for Children & Families, among others.

“Stopping this crime is a significant priority for Orange County law enforcement,” Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes said. “I look forward to participating on this task force and working with Congresswoman Young Kim to make positive change on this issue at the federal level.”
