Rep Young Kim

Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Representative Young Kim (CA-40), who serves as Chairwoman of the Indo-Pacific Subcommittee, released a statement on Jimmy Lai’s national security trial in Hong Kong.

“Let’s be clear: Jimmy Lai’s trial in Hong Kong today is just the latest case of Beijing using its ‘national security law’ to coerce, silence, bully, and punish dissenters of its regime and keep its grip on power,” said Rep. Kim. “A threat to freedom anywhere is a threat to freedom everywhere. I am proud to lead the Hong Kong Sanctions Act and a bipartisan resolution condemning the Chinese Communist Party’s crackdowns on Hong Kong. I refuse to be silenced and will always be a loud voice for human rights around the world.”

Rep. Kim has been a steadfast supporter of human rights and freedom of Hong Kongers, leading bipartisan efforts such as:

  • resolution to condemn the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) crackdowns on Hong Kong and support Hong Kongers’ human rights.
  • The Hong Kong Sanctions Act (H.R. 6153) to hold Hong Kong officials accountable for human rights violations and stand with Hong Kongers facing scrutiny under Beijing’s “national security law.”

Last month, a pro-Beijing lawyer petitioned Hong Kong’s High Court to allow for the arrest of Rep. Kim and original cosponsors of the Hong Kong Sanctions Act.
