Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Representative Young Kim (CA-40) supported the bipartisan FY2024 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to equip our Department of Defense (DoD) with the resources they need to keep our nation safe and support our men and women in uniform.
The bipartisan FY2024 NDAA prioritizes military readiness, increases pay and benefits for our servicemembers, and bolsters U.S. strength against global threats.
“American leadership is at risk as we face increasing threats abroad and growing military recruitment and readiness issues at home. America has been the land of freedom, hope, and opportunity for 247 years because of the dedicated service and sacrifice of our military. It is more important than ever to support our brave men and women who have answered the call to serve and defend our values we hold,” said Rep. Kim, Chairwoman of the Indo-Pacific Subcommittee. “Our military must be ready to face global threats wherever they come – by land, sea, air, space, or cyberspace. This bipartisan NDAA prioritizes U.S. strength against the Chinese Communist Party and other adversaries, supports our troops and their families, and enhances oversight and accountability of the DoD. I will always support our men and women in uniform and ensure that the United States military remains the world’s greatest fighting force.”
The NDAA supports our troops by:
- Authorizing a 5.2% increase in servicemember basic pay, the largest pay raise in over 20 years;
- Reducing the burden of out-of-pocket housing expenses and childcare costs for military families; and,
- Allowing for the construction of new childcare centers.
The NDAA prioritizes U.S. strength against growing aggression by the Chinese Communist Party by:
- Supporting military operations and exercises with our allies and partners in the Indo-Pacific;
- Strengthening military cybersecurity with Taiwan;
- Encouraging local military agreements with Pacific Island nations to improve bilateral relationships; and,
- Improving training and development of the security cooperation development workforce to expedite the delivery of Foreign Military Sales to Taiwan and other partners.
The NDAA cuts wasteful spending at the Pentagon and boosts oversight by:
- Cutting over $5.8 billion in weapons programs that have not met development milestones or are experiencing excessive cost growth;
- Penalizing DoD for cost overruns on major defense programs; and,
- Requiring a comprehensive audit of price and cost data by DoD IG of major defense acquisition programs.
