Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Representative Young Kim (CA-40) was selected to serve as chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Indo-Pacific in the 118th Congress.
Rep. Kim grew up in South Korea in the aftermath of the Korean War, is one of the first Korean American women in Congress and served as Vice Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific, Central Asia and Nonproliferation and as a member of the China Task Force in the 117th Congress.
“America’s national security ensures our way of life and protects the American dream for future generations. This requires our nation to be trusted by our allies, feared by our adversaries and followed by strong, decisive action by our leaders,” said Chairwoman Kim. “U.S. foreign policy decisions in the Indo-Pacific region will be pivotal in determining America’s future and standing on the world stage. I am humbled to serve as chair of this important subcommittee and will work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to promote global human rights, support fellow freedom-loving countries, strengthen free trade with our allies and hold our adversaries accountable.”

Rep. Kim delivered many accomplishments on the House Foreign Affairs Committee in the 117th Congress, such as:

Leading the Arms Exports Delivery Solutions Act, which became law through the NDAA to track delivery of backlogged U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, South Korea, Japan and other Indo Pacific allies;

Helping reunite Korean American divided families with war-torn loved ones and fight for the human rights of the North Korean people;

Supporting human rights of Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region by leading the bipartisan Uyghur Policy Act;

Introducing the Rescue Endangered SIVs and Citizens and Urgently Evacuate to Safety (RESCUES) Act of 2022 to establish congressional oversight of the State Department’s management of private Afghanistan evacuation operations; and,
-
Advocating for Taiwan’s observer status in the World Health Organization and World Health Assembly, which became law.
Rep. Kim was also selected to serve on the Financial Services Committee, on the Financial Institutions and Monetary Policy Subcommittee and as Vice Chair of the National Security, Illicit Finance and International Financial Institutions Subcommittee, in the 118th Congress.
