WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Young Kim (CA-40) questioned Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) Director Andrea Gacki during a House Financial Services Subcommittee hearing titled “Oversight of FinCEN.”
During the hearing, Rep. Kim sought an update on Treasury’s investigation into widespread student aid fraud. In California alone, one in three community college applications in 2024 were flagged as likely fraudulent, leading to more than $13 million in stolen federal and state financial aid. Rep. Kim has led efforts to address the crisis, including a letter last year urging the Department of Education to launch a federal investigation.
Rep. Kim also raised concerns about FinCEN’s Residential Real Estate Transfer reporting rule, highlighting the compliance burdens it places on legitimate businesses. She urged FinCEN to ensure reporting requirements provide meaningful value for law enforcement while avoiding unnecessary costs and red tape for small businesses.
