TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – US senators from both main parties introduced the proposal for a Taiwan Non-Discrimination Act on Thursday to support Taiwan’s bid to join the International Monetary Fund.

Republicans Dave McCormick and Dan Sullivan, and Democrats Jacky Rosen and Elissa Slotkin joined forces to submit the bill, per CNA. In a statement published on McCormick’s website, they underlined Taiwan’s importance to the global economy, particularly in the field of technology.

The senator described Taiwan as a key trading partner and as an exporter of “technology that powers devices Americans use each and every day.” The bill would require the US governor of the International Monetary Fund, currently Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, to vote in favor of Taiwan’s return to the IMF, from which it was removed in 1980. The proposal by the four senators would also allow Taiwan to receive technical assistance and training by the IMF.

The House of Representatives Financial Services Committee passed a companion bill proposed by Republican Young Kim and Democrat Al Green in March.
