Washington, DC – U.S. Representative Young Kim (CA-39), who serves on the Foreign Affairs Committee and as Vice Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific, Central Asia and Nonproliferation, joined her colleagues in calling for continued sanctions against the Taliban following the withdrawal of American troops from the region.
“From routinely violating human rights to welcoming known terrorists in their regime, the Taliban has proven time and time again they cannot be trusted,” said Congresswoman Kim. “As we continue to work to save Americans and our allies following the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan, we cannot allow the Taliban to gain additional assets. Lifting sanctions will only give them more leverage against our country.”
Congresswoman Kim joined Foreign Affairs Committee colleagues, led by Committee Ranking Member Michael McCaul (TX-10) in writing to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to maintain United States sanctions against the Taliban and their associated forces. These sanctions have been critical to prevent the Taliban from rebuilding their terrorist networks and lethal capabilities.
She also joined colleagues led by Congressman Andy Barr (KY-06) in a letter to United Nations (UN) Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield to support the complete and continued implementation of all UN sanctions against the Taliban and request that all travel waivers granted to senior members of the Taliban during peace negotiations are rescinded. The Taliban must be denied international legitimacy and access to additional assets, especially as Americans, citizens of allied nations and Afghan partners remain behind enemy lines.
