Newsmax: Young Kim to Newsmax: Socialism Destroys Freedom and Economic Opportunity | Newsmax.com
Rep. Young Kim, R-Calif., told Newsmax on Thursday that Americans must remember socialism’s record of destroying freedom and economic opportunity as more Democratic candidates embrace the ideology.
”You know, I recently spoke on the House floor. It was a reminder for myself, my family, and anyone who is watching to make sure that we never forget the price of socialism,” Kim said on ”National Report.”
Kim, who was born in South Korea and is one of the first Korean American women elected to Congress, cited her family’s experience with the North Korean regime while contrasting socialism with capitalism.
”Look, my family also left the country, and my mother-in-law, for example, left North Korea,” Kim said. ”She crossed the DMZ line multiple times to make sure that she could go and rescue people to come to a country like South Korea, where capitalism brings some opportunities, and we lived there.”
Kim’s comments came after the House voted 220-192 on Tuesday to adopt a nonbinding resolution condemning and denouncing ”socialism in all its forms.” Eight Democrats joined 211 Republicans and one independent in supporting the measure.
A total of 192 Democrats opposed it, two voted present and 18 lawmakers did not vote.
The resolution, introduced by Rep. Jeff Crank, R-Colo., warns against implementing socialist policies in the United States and points to the growing influence of the Democratic Socialists of America.
It also calls for passage of the SAVE America Act, a Republican-backed election measure supported by President Donald Trump.
That provision drew objections from Democrats, including some centrists who said they opposed socialism but believed Republicans had turned the resolution into a partisan election-year maneuver by adding the voting legislation. The resolution does not change federal law.
The House adopted a separate resolution denouncing socialism in November 2025 by a 285-98 vote, with 86 Democrats joining Republicans. Unlike the latest measure, the earlier resolution did not specifically mention the DSA or endorse the SAVE America Act.
Kim said politicians can attract support by promising government-provided benefits without explaining socialism’s broader consequences.
”But over time, when we talk about and hear so many politicians giving promises of free rent, free groceries, you tend to believe that politicians like me are the savior and they will make their lives a little bit better,” Kim said. ”But let’s not forget what socialism has done.
“They never run on their track record of bringing starvation, poverty, the loss of freedom and opportunities. We see hundreds of millions of people losing their lives worldwide.”
Kim represents California’s 40th Congressional District and serves on the House Foreign Affairs and Financial Services committees. She also chairs the Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on East Asia and the Pacific.
”This is why I spoke on the House floor to remind them capitalism is opportunity and socialism eliminates it or destroys it,” Kim said. ”So I felt an obligation and responsibility to remind everybody that we just need to make sure that socialism is not the only option for them. And I also will do everything I can to make sure that the next generation rejects socialism.”
