Golden State Today: Rep. Young Kim introduces Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Act to address global maternal health – Golden State Today
U.S. Representative Young Kim introduced the Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Act on July 2 to deploy American-made interventions aimed at reducing maternal and child mortality worldwide while supporting U.S. national security and foreign policy interests.
According to the announcement, nearly 260,000 women die each year from preventable pregnancy-related complications. The legislation seeks to scale evidence-based solutions such as Multiple Micronutrient Supplement prenatal vitamins, skilled birth attendants, and basic infection treatment in select partner countries by directing targeted U.S. global health assistance that prioritizes results, accountability, and American-made solutions.
“As a mom and grandma, I know nothing matters more than the health of our children,” said Representative Young Kim. “The Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Act is a smart, targeted, and cost-effective approach that saves lives while strengthening America’s leadership abroad. By scaling proven interventions, supporting American manufacturing, and partnering with countries committed to better outcomes, we are advancing U.S. interests and building a more stable world.”
The bill highlights that MMS prenatal vitamins and other supported interventions are powered by American innovation and manufacturing—intended to reinforce domestic supply chains while helping reduce maternal and child mortality globally. The act also aims to foster more stable partner nations through improved health outcomes.
Young Kim is currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing California’s 40th district after replacing Gil Cisneros in 2021; she previously served in the California State Assembly from 2014 to 2016, according to her official website. Kim was born in Incheon, South Korea in 1962; she resides in La Habra and graduated from the University of Southern California with a BBA.
