Washington, D.C. – Today, The House Committee on Natural Resources passed out of markup the Harnessing Energy At Thermal Sources (HEATS) Act (H.R. 7409), a bipartisan bill lead by Representatives Young Kim (CA-40) and Adam Gray (CA-13) to streamline geothermal energy development and production and decrease energy costs.

 “Energy independence has always made America great. Geothermal development will help unleash America’s all-of-the-above energy strategy and power America’s energy future,” said Rep. Young Kim. “The HEATS Act cuts unnecessary red tape, strengthens our energy security, and brings more affordable, reliable power online. For Californians facing some of the highest energy costs in the country, this relief can’t come soon enough.”

The HEATS Act will:

  • Eliminate duplicative federal requirements when a valid state permit is already in place;
  • Allow geothermal projects to move forward when the federal government owns less than 50% of the resource;
  • Cut unnecessary federal red tape to help unlock geothermal energy development across the United States.
  • This legislation passed the House with strong bipartisan support in the 118th Congress.
