alifornia Gov. Gavin Newsom, D, is ruffling Republican feathers with a week-long trip to China focused on climate change.

The California governor kicked off his week-long visit on Monday with a trip to the University of Hong Kong where he said California will be an “ally” to the nation on climate change measures.

“I want you to know, regardless of what happens nationally, sub-nationally, you have a partner in the state of California,” he said.

The trip follows a letter signed by multiple Republican lawmakers demanding Newsom cancel his trip, knocking him for focusing on climate change during the trip and avoiding “gross violations of human rights” by the communist nation.

“This will have serious consequences & is a disservice to Californians,” Rep. Young Kim, R-Calif., wrote when posting the letter, which was signed by eight members of Congress, including Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.

Rep. Michelle Steel, R-Calif., told Politico Newsom is “delusional.”

“Governor Newsom’s effort to cozy up to the Chinese Communist Party is delusional,” she said.

Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, told the outlet Newsom’s trip is focused on “eding America’s energy and emissions reduction to the CCP.”

Melissa Melendez, a former Republican state senator in California, took to X and accused Newsom of using his international travel to build his “national profile.”
