Rep. Young Kim Speaks at Science, Space and Technology Committee Markup

Washington, DC – This week, U.S. Representative Young Kim (CA-39) helped introduce the Next Generation Pipelines Research and Development Act (H.R. 9349) to promote U.S. energy security by increasing federal research and development (R&D) and demonstration of next-generation pipeline infrastructure for current and future energy sources.

Rep. Kim joined Rep. Randy Weber (TX-14) and House Science, Space and Technology Committee Ranking Member Frank Lucas (OK-03) in introducing this bill.

“U.S. energy independence is critical to create jobs, lower costs of fuel and utilities, strengthen our domestic resources and ensure we do not have to rely on adversaries to fuel our country. We must improve our energy pipelines to keep our communities running,” said Kim. “The Next Generation Pipelines Research and Development Act is a commonsense bill to improve energy infrastructure, boost American innovation and secure our supply chains. I’ll keep fighting for U.S. energy independence.”

The Next Generation Pipelines Research and Development Act would increase federal R&D of pipeline infrastructure by:

  • Creating a Demonstration Initiative at the Department of Energy (DOE) to support projects related to energy pipeline performance, safety and integrity;
  • Establishing a joint R&D program between DOE, the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST); and,
  • Forming a National Pipeline Modernization Center at DOE as a collaboration hub for the public and private sectors to understand and assist the joint R&D research and demonstration projects.
