Rep. Kim visits Eureka Pizza in Yorba Linda to discuss helping our small businesses during COVID-19.

Feb 1, 2021 | Economy, Press Releases

Washington, DC – U.S. Representative Young Kim (CA-39) joined Rep. Thomas Suozzi (NY-03) and colleagues to cut taxes for Californians by introducing the Securing Access to Lower Taxes by ensuring Deductibility (SALT Deductibility) Act. This bipartisan bill gives Californians much-needed tax relief by fully repealing the cap on state and local tax (SALT) deductions.

“The cap on SALT deductions has burdened our California workers, families and businesses as our state continues to have some of the highest taxes in the nation. This bill simply repeals this SALT deductions cap, so Californians can keep more of their hard-earned dollars and make life more affordable,” said Congresswoman Kim. “I came to Congress to create commonsense policies and get things done in a bipartisan way. I’m proud to keep my promise to my constituents by introducing the bipartisan SALT Deductibility Act today, and I’ll continue to do all I can to improve the lives of my community in the 39th District of California.”

“Californians shouldn’t have to be punished further by their high state taxes. The cap on SALT deductions has hurt Californians for far too long, and I thank Rep. Kim for her leadership in fully repealing the SALT cap to keep more money in Californians’ pockets,” said Mayor Nancy Lyons, City of Diamond Bar.

“The cap on SALT deductions has forced Californians to pay taxes to the federal government that they already pay to our state and local governments. I applaud Rep. Kim for working to right this wrong and fight for Brea families and let taxpayers keep more of their money in their pockets,” said Mayor Steve Vargas, City of Brea.

“Californians are already burdened by high taxes and the SALT deductions caps have only added to our tax burdens. The repeal of the SALT deductions cap will help Californians keep more of their hard-earned money during these especially difficult times and I want to thank Rep. Kim for her leadership in standing up for Yorba Linda families,” said Mayor Peggy Huang, City of Yorba Linda.

“We are excited about the prospect of the SALT Deductibility Act. The Act will help restore the state income tax deduction and mortgage interest deductions that our residents had enjoyed for many years, prior to the 2017-18 tax law changes. The SALT Act will help restore these previous federal tax deductions to ensure Placentia residents and Californians put more money back in their pockets, which will help our local economy,” said Mayor Craig Green, City of Placentia.

A repeal of the SALT deduction is also supported by state leaders and several national leaders including:

  • US Conference of Mayors
  • National Association of Counties
  • National League of Cities
  • International Association of Firefighters
  • National Association of Realtors
  • American Federation of Teachers
  • National Education Association
  • National Association of Police Organizations
