Washington, DC – U.S. Representative Young Kim (CA-39) released the following statement on the violence that occurred today at the U.S. Capitol during the joint session of Congress:

“I came to this country with my family to have the opportunity to achieve the American dream. I put myself through school, ran a small business, raised a family, and now represent in Congress the community I call home. The American dream is alive and real, and it’s up to each of us to ensure this great American experiment can continue and allow future generations to realize their dream.

“What we witnessed today was abhorrent and not what America stands for. Peaceful protests are a First Amendment right and fundamental to our democracy, but violence cannot be tolerated and must be condemned. Those responsible should be found and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I hope today’s events showed each of us that we need to move forward, deescalate our rhetoric and work together to heal our wounds for the future of our democracy and our nation.

“Finally, I thank our law enforcement on and around the Capitol for their dedication to keeping us safe today. Law enforcement across our country have had an extremely difficult year and we cannot thank them enough for their service.”
