Washington, DC – U.S. Representative Young Kim (CA-39) joined her colleagues on the House Foreign Affairs Committee to pass out of committee H.R. 1157, a bipartisan bill to reauthorize the U.S. Department of State.

Rep. Kim led two bipartisan amendments that were included in the final bill.

The first amendment was a bipartisan bill introduced earlier this week by Rep. Kim and Rep. Gerry Connolly (VA-11). H.R. 1244 would eliminate duplicative and outdated reporting requirements for State Department employees and encourage the State Department to modernize and expand foreign service officer training programs.

The second amendment would direct the State Department to modernize and expand foreign service officer training programs for its employees to achieve parity with other federal agencies and the private sector.

“I’m proud to have led two efforts that would ensure our State Department is equipped to carry out our nation’s foreign policy objectives in the 21st century. My amendments make sure that our dedicated State Department staff can spend less time on mundane reporting requirements and more time training to better compete with their peers around the world,” said Kim. “In today’s interconnected world, our foreign service officers must adapt to changing circumstances in order to effectively pursue America’s interests internationally. I’ll continue to do whatever I can to create a more effective and efficient government.”
